Supported Independent Living (SIL)
Support that actually supports.
Active Ability Care is a registered NDIS provider offering Supported Independent Living (SIL) for adults with cognitive disabilities across Western Sydney.
We believe the support ratio should actually mean something.
If a participant requires 1:1 support, we provide 1:1 support. We don't believe in calling something 1:1 when one support worker is actually supporting several participants at the same time.
The level of support should reflect what the participant actually needs.
Communication matters
Families should not have to wonder what is happening with their loved one.
Management is closely involved in our services and knows what is happening day to day. We keep families informed and make it easy to speak with us when something needs to be discussed.
The family isn't invisible.
We also communicate regularly with allied health, we provide shift notes, summaries, incident reports so that everyone is kept in the loop and can work together.
SIL built around the person
There isn't one routine that works for everyone.
Some people may need support to get ready and attend a day program. Others may have a job, attend one of our adult programs, spend time in the community or have their own plans and routines.
We build support around the person — not the other way around.
Support can include:
-
Personal care and daily routines
-
Cooking and meal preparation
-
Cleaning and household tasks
-
Building everyday life skills
-
Support to attend work or day programs
-
Community participation
-
Appointments and errands
-
Social activities and relationships
-
Building confidence and independence
We are good at solving problems
Sometimes a person needs more than a provider who simply follows the usual routine.
When something isn't working, we want to understand why.
We look at what is happening, discuss the options, make changes and see what works. If it doesn't work, we try something else.
Our experience supporting people with cognitive disabilities — including people who have struggled to find the right support elsewhere — is a big part of what we bring to SIL.
The right home matters
We are developing our SIL accommodation options across Western Sydney and will consider different types of homes depending on the needs of the people we support.
This may include Improved Liveability or fully accessible accommodation where appropriate.
We want to get the right people, support and home together — rather than simply filling an available room.
